2001 NPC Chess Champs Named, 2002 Plans Laid

The Albert W. Fox Memorial Cup has been won by Howard Rausch, NPC 2001 Chess Tournament winner. Don Foxvog and John Reed placed second and third, respectively, in the tourney.

The Chess Committee is planning chess events for NPC members' sons and daughters this Fall. These will include games and tips to improve players' skills. For those who like faster action than the usual lengthy chess match, five-minute games will be demonstrated.

Matches with other clubs are also being arranged. The Committee is eager to reach any NPC chess players who may not have time to play in the annual tournament, but who would like to play in one or more of our matches with other clubs.

The Committee invites all NPC members who would like to play in a match with another club or who have a son or daughter who plays chess to contact Chess Chair John Reed at (301) 469-9180 or E-mail: jreed8221@aol.com.

Fight Terrorism With Community Involvement Says CNCS Executive

Americans who ask what they can do to fight terrorism need to get involved in their community says Leslie Lenkowsky, CEO of the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS). He told the Aug. 27 Club Luncheon that protecting the homeland requires “an unprecedented level of commitment by everyday people to support first responders and ensure that homes, families, schools, places of business and worship and other public spaces are prepared to face any crisis.” Lenkowsky urged Congress to pass the Citizen Service Act, pending in the House, and which would provide new funding and reforms for CNCS programs such as AmeriCorps and Senior Corps. "A clear Congressional endorsement of this work,” he said, “would be a fitting way to recognize the efforts volunteers made last Sept. 11 and are still making to guard against the evils of terrorism."

Meet the head spook from the new Spy Museum. The festivities begin with a cash bar reception at 6:30 p.m., then a seated dinner and spy stories, with a musical salute to Bernie Goodrich, retiring "Head Hoot" of the Silver Owls. The tab is $30. Paige: New Initiative Not Working for All Children

Education reform is working for some kids but is not working for too many kids, says U. S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. In his Sept. 9 Club Luncheon address Paige noted "there are still a lot of flaps to nail down" with the No Child Left Behind initiative, but "we have the tools, the money and the expertise to make a good system better." Paige said the terrorist attacks on 9/11 called for "new approaches in how we go about protecting our schools and the children in them." Teachers and principals, he said, are the "ultimate first-responders . . . they went the extra mile to ease children's fears." The packed ballroom gave a standing ovation for head table guest Pat Hymel, an elementary school principal from Arlington, Va., who led the evacuation of her student body on 9/11 only to learn that her husband died when Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon. She is one of the quiet heroes, Paige said.

Deford Questions the Athletic Scholarship

Sportswriter Frank Deford told the Sept. 5 Luncheon audience that he believes the athletic scholarship "causes irreparable harm to our attitudes about education and the resources that it unwisely uses up." He questioned why college athletes should get scholarships for their extra-curricular activity, when students who sing in a glee club, write for the college newspaper or work for the campus radio or television station do not. "What the athletic scholarship does is send the message that college—higher education—thinks that sports are more important than art or music or literature." He did say, however, "it is certainly fair that girls, too, should get athletic scholarships now, taking them down to a level previously only enjoyed by the boys."
