Details: The head of the famed Mayo Clinic, Dr. Denis Cortese, will address a National Press Club luncheon March 21 and propose a health care framework for consideration by the next president. In a speech titled "Creating a Health Care System That Works for Americans," he will outline six components needed to create a health care system that works and will describe results of a health reform symposium held in Washington on what patients want to see. Dr. Cortese, noting an emerging alignment among various proposals, will urge the next president to take a leadership role in making health reform a reality, Dr. Cortese is president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. He is also a professor of medicine and was director of the pulmonary disease subspecialty training program from 1979-1987, receiving the teacher of the year award in two of those years. He is a member of The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and chair of the Roundtable on Evidence Based Medicine; Healthcare Leadership Council, chair for 2007-2009; Harvard/Kennedy Healthcare Policy Group; Council of Corporate Competitiveness and the National Innovation Initiative; Academia Nacional de Medicina (Mexico) and the Royal College of Physicians (London). The National Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m., and Dr. Cortese remarks begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session.
