America's Role in Asia Report Launch

On Wednesday, September 10, Ambassador Stapleton Roy, Vice Chairman of Kissinger Associates and former U.S. Ambassador to China, Indonesia, and Singapore will lead a panel of top Asian foreign policy experts on U.S. FOREIGN POLICY PRIORITIES FOR THE NEXT ADMINISTRATION. Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large at the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York; Han Sung-Joo, former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the U.S. and former visiting professor at Stanford University; Dr. C. Raja Mohan, author of Impossible Allies: Nuclear India, U.S. and the Global Order and former member of India's National Security Advisory Board will discuss recommendations on energy security, trade, and the environment & U.S. bilateral relationships with Afghanistan, China, India, North Korea and Pakistan. Asia Foundation President Douglas Bereuter, a former 13-term Congressman, will moderate.

The recommendations are from a new report to be released September 10 by The Asia Foundation called America's Role in Asia: Asian and American Views. The report provides fresh analysis of trans-national issues such as those taking place on the Korean peninsula and along the Taiwan Strait, and dissects U.S. relationships with China, India, Pakistan, as well as its role with important Asian regional associations like ASEAN. The report is comprised of 18 in-depth white papers written by some of today's most respected experts in these areas, such as Teresita Schaffer (on Pakistan), Rick Inderfurth (on India), Harry Harding (on China), and Elizabeth Economy (on the environment).

The U.S. presidential campaign is in full swing, but American foreign policy to Asia --home to over half the world's population and six of its ten largest countries-- is in grave danger of being put on the back-burner. The 2008 report emphasizes that, with the rise of many powers in the region and their ability to influence our economy and security, Asia demands critical attention from the new U.S. Administration.

Join the discussion on Wednesday, September 10, 2008; from 9:00-11:00 am at The National Press Club Conference Room, 529 14th Street, NW.

For more information or to RSVP, please contact Katherine Brown, 202.271.1751, or kbrown@asiafound.org. To download a free copy of the America's Role in Asia report, please visit http://www.asiafoundation.org.
